hybrid busPSTA will be showcasing a Hybrid SmartBus at Largo Cultural Center April 22 from 5 pm to 9 pm for Earth Day.  The demonstration  which encourages people to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Come find out how these special vehicles benefit our environment by significantly reducing emissions.

Nearly a year after the deployment Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) fuel-saving buses, the diesel-electric hybrids are consistently operating at an average fuel efficiency that is 56% better than PSTA’s standard diesel buses. The agency’s 10 hybrids get an average of 6.4 miles to the gallon, while the rest of the fleet meets the national average of 4.1 mpg.

Most of the hybrids are customized as trolley buses and operate along the Suncoast Beach Trolley and Route 35. The slower speeds and frequent stops along those routes are perfect for maximizing fuel gains from hybrid technology. In fact, the hybrids that are exclusive to those routes average an outstanding 6.77 mpg.

“We’re not only doing what’s best for our budget and spending taxpayer dollars wisely, but we’re doing what’s best for the environment,” says PSTA Executive Director Tim Garling.

Pollution reductions for each hybrid bus compared with a standard diesel are as follows:

Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX)  50%  Reduction
Carbon Monoxide (CO)       90%  Reduction
Particulate Matter (SOOT)  90%  Reduction
Hydrocarbons (HC)             up to 90%  Reduction

The diesel-electric hybrid bus technology will be featured on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Largo ’s Green Expo and Trashy Fashion Show, Largo Cultural Center , 105 Central Park Drive .
